How to force restart (hard reset) an iPad, Mac or Chromebook
A force restart is the "hard reset" that fixes most frozen screens and stuck apps. It doesn't erase anything, but work you haven't saved may be lost, so save first if you can.
iPad with a Home button
1. Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time.
2. Let go when the Apple logo appears.
iPad without a Home button
1. Press and quickly let go of the volume button nearest the top button.
2. Press and quickly let go of the other volume button.
3. Press and hold the top button. Let go when the Apple logo appears.
Mac
1. Press and hold the power button until the Mac turns off (about 10 seconds). On a MacBook it's the Touch ID button at the top right of the keyboard. On a Mac mini it's on the back.
2. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on.
Chromebook
1. Press and hold the power button until the Chromebook turns off.
2. Wait a few seconds, then press the power button again to turn it back on.
Never choose "Erase All Content and Settings", "Reset" or "Powerwash". Those wipe the device, and only IT should do them.
Contact IT: if the device won't turn back on, or keeps freezing after a restart, submit a ticket.
